Software development companies practicing usability engineering in their software development process are not equally successful in terms of the usability of their products. Subsequently, there is potential to waste valuable resources when introducing usability measures. However, small-sized software development companies, which usually suffer from a constant lack of time and budget, cannot afford to waste any resources. This thesis aims at identifying reasons for success of usability measures in small-sized software development companies aiming at producing user-oriented products.

First, a review of current literature is undertaken in order to identify significant success factors for the introduction of usability measures. Then qualitative interviews are conducted with usability agents of small-sized software development companies. The interviews aim at assessing the relevance and importance of the success factors identified in the literature research.

The main outcome of this thesis is that there are actually several factors which affect the successful introduction of usability measures in small-sized software development companies. The findings suggest that software development teams need to apply all success factors investigated in this thesis in order to successfully produce usable software products. By describing the assessment of each success factor, small-sized software development companies which decide to address usability issues are provided with knowledge on how to benefit from success factors and how to avoid major pitfalls.
